New Bremen (NY) – The time has come. With signs of Summer normally coming in spurts of sunshine, warmth, and green grass, it comes in different spurts for those who take in the action at the ASA-sanctioned Adirondack International Speedway. The smell of high-octane fuel pumping through race engines on pit road and the smell of fresh rubber taking to the track, indicates the time is here.
Lewis County’s Adirondack International Speedway is ready to roar to life after completing the first of two preseason “Test and Tune” sessions this past Saturday. As 20+ racers flocked to the half-mile oval on an overcast and dreary day, the pavement saw its first action of the 2008 season.
In the ASA Challenger Late Model division, Tommy Cloce of Potsdam turned the quickest laps of the day in his No. 3 Toyota Camry. Cloce is readying for a comeback season at AIS after a somewhat quiet year in 2007. Also taking to the track was Morrisonville’s Bryant Trim. The 24-year-old Trim is prepared for an all-out assault at the Championship in ’08 after finishing fourth in the point standings last season. Brendt Matzel of Chittenango also made his way out for the session but his time on the track was cut short after a power steering pump failed. The failure ignited a fire under the hood of his Monte Carlo while he was rounding the track. Matzel quickly came to a stop and evacuated his car while the track crew distinguished the fire. As Matzel walked away unscathed, the same could not be said for his family owned machine as it showed significant fire damage to the hood and the windshield.
Also in action were teams among all four divisions at the Speedway. This coming May 10th will be the second set of practice for the competitors. Cost of admission is free in the grandstands and $10 at the pit gate. The 12pm-4pm session will set up as the final time for competitors to shake down their equipment before the May 17th Season Opener. The opener will be headlined with a 100-lap ASA Challenger Late Model Renegade Nationals Qualifier. The top-five in the 100-lap event will be guaranteed starters for this October’s, 2nd Annual TJ Toyota/Waite Toyota Renegade Nationals 200, October 11-12th.
