LEE GILL COLLECTS RENEGADE SPRING NATIONALS AT ADIRONDACK

New Bremen , NY – The outside talent came into play, but it was just one of the locals to outlast the rest. Lee Gill, a sophomore speedster out of La Fargeville (NY) started 7th Saturday night at the ASA-Sanctioned, Adirondack International Speedway and come races’ end he outlasted defending track champion John Papin for a popular 101-lap event victory. It was Gill’s career first on the asphalt.

In the Lyndaker Excavating & Trucking ASA Challenger Late Models, 24-cars took the green flag from head starter Timmy Barone and leading them down to the flaggers cue was Jason Herrington of Troy . Herrington danced out front at the drop of the green in his Rifenburg Construction Chevrolet Monte Carlo before Chris Ross made contact with Pennsylvania hot-shoe Matt Barndt sending Barndt around on the opening circuit. Four cars total were collected and two were done for the night. Soon after, Herrington jumped out front again with the stout field in tow.

The talented wheelman would lead through lap-40 before Papin would press his way into the lead after coming from the fourth starting spot. Going wheel to wheel down the backstretch Papin nosed out front and quickly ran away. On lap 45, Gill and Herrington waged battle for the second position, putting on a fantastic show for the fans. While the duo diced for the runner-up position, Morrisonville’s (NY) Bryant Trim gained ground from the 10th starting position and began battle as well. A three-car battle turned into a two-car battle shortly after as Trim broke a transmission exiting turn four ending his night. With 25 laps to go Papin sat well out front with Gill beginning his trek forward. With quicker lap times, Papin had the field covered. As lap 84 was scored Gill began to close to the back bumper of Papin beginning a race for the lead by lap 86. A late caution would set the two nose-to-tail and on lap 94, Gill would muscle his way past Papin. In dramatic fashion, Gill would hold onto the win with Papin holding on for second. Herrington, Tommy Cloce and Eden’s (NY) George Skora would round out the top-five.

In the GotGoodCheese.com True Stock division, Dylan Bancroft started on the pole and appeared to be the man to beat all night. Just 15 years young, Bancroft led every circuit but the final one as JR Mooney of Boonville (NY) took the lead exiting turn four on the last lap. In a door-to-door finish, Mooney claimed the win with Bancroft trailing. However, during post-race technical inspection Mooney’s car was found to be illegal. His unfortunate dealing would hand the spoils to Bancroft. In the final rundown, Light Truck division graduate Mike Ramos nipped second. Originally the third place finisher, Dave Arbes was found light over the scales, cycling him down to the end of the result board. Awarded third was Duane Williamson with Rick Mooney and Mark Rhodes rounding out the top-five.

Al Brigham of Lowville, picked up his first win at the Speedway since 2002 in the D&D Powersports Sport Compact division. Contending for the championship in ’07, Brigham picked up a heat-race win in which set him on the pole for the 20-lap main. He led wire-to-wire over Tom Dubach and Rudy Widrick with Canton ’s (NY) Larry Costa taking fourth and of Oswego (NY) Scott Shafer nipping fifth.

Capping the night off in what always is an entertaining match, the Westward Painting Company Light Trucks took to the AIS half-mile 21 trucks strong. The 2006 Track Champion Todd McIntyre took the fast field down to the green flag from his pole position. His position quickly turned into a position he would not relinquish. McIntyre led the full 15-lap distance with Steve Ellis finishing second. Bob McCanney turned in a solid run finishing third with Tom McIntyre and Levi Kirkbride taking fourth and fifth.

Next week at the Speedway is the Memorial Day Weekend extravaganza. Starting it off on Saturday a regular show will headline with the 50-lap ASA Challenger Late Models. Two days later the Dirt 358 Modifieds will take to the track, in an event sponsored by Old Forge Powersports, the NORA Small-Block Supermodifieds are slated to compete as well in the 2pm show.

Notes: A grand total of 69 competitors packed the pits. John Papin and Chris Ross timed first and second in Late Model Time Trials. Four Late Model pilots hailed from Pennsylvania . Jim Lamareaux finished the strongest with a solid sixth. Out of Western New York, George Skora, Ron Nurmi, Scott Nurmi as well as Todd Hoddick all made their first ever appearance to Adirondack. Cole Pearn of London, ON, Canada was also in attendance for the first-time. Each competitor plans to be back in the future.
