PAPIN RECORDS THE HAT TRICK; WILLIAMSON, WIDRICK, AND DELLES SCORE SUPPORT DIVISION WINS AT THE ADIRONDACK INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY
NEW BREMEN, NY – John Papin of Redwood won his third consecutive L.E.T. ASA Challenger Late Model feature event this past Saturday at the Adirondack International Speedway. Papin, who won $1,000 for his efforts in the 50-lap dash, beat out fellow hotshoes Jason Herrington and Tommy Cloce to do it. Also winning were Duane Williamson in the GotGoodCheese.com True Stocks, Rudy Widrick in the D&D Powersports Sport Compacts and Keith Delles in the Westward Painting Company Light Trucks.
In his unsponsored Ford, Jerry Dineen of Little Falls out dragged Billy Coyle of Mecklenburg to the first turn of the 50-lap event. In hot pursuit was Herrington, of Troy . After starting in the fifth position, Herrington edged into the third position after the first circuit and then moved pass Eric Cupernall for second on lap four.
Immediately chasing down Dineen, Herrington was able to scoot to the lead on lap-10 and look to run away from the chasing field. Cloce, following the every move of Herrington chased the “Flyin’ Farmer” taking second on lap-10. While Herrington appeared to be off just a beat, Cloce had the faster car of the two. Looking to find the quickest way to the lead, Cloce had to deal with Herrington as he used every bit of the spacey half-mile to keep Cloce at bay. While the front two played cat and mouse for the top spot, Bryant Trim was sent around in corner number four with the help from Eric Cupernall and the field was slowed for the first time of the night. On the lap 11 restart Papin was shown making his first bid in the top-five and one lap later he would join the front-five and strategically begin his route to the front. After 15 laps of green flag racing the top-five at the halfway point saw Herrington at the point with Gill getting by Cloce for second while Papin and after a two-week hiatus Chola Shay filled the front five.
With Herrington showing the way out front, Gill, Cloce and Papin jockeyed position in the top-five displaying a great deal of action for the healthy crowd. With 37 laps in the book and in lap traffic, Herrington gambled in turn three looking to pin Papin behind a slower car, but his choice proved to be the wrong one. Papin banzeyed into turn three beneath Herrington and motored into the lead with twelve laps remaining. Building up a comfortable lead, Papin rolled on for his third consecutive win, pulling off the hat trick in just four tries. Herrington crossed in second with Cloce edging Gill for third. Rounding out the top-five was Bryant Trim after coming from the rear early on. “That was a lot of fun,” quoted Papin in victory lane. “I knew when Jason moved high to go around the lap car, that that was my chance to go for it. We cut it close down there but we came out of it out front. Once the car was in the clean air, it really liked it.”
In the GotGoodCheese.com True Stocks, Duane Williamson started on the point for the 20-lap event and led every lap in a complete barn-burner capping his first career win at the Speedway . With sophomore pilot Dylan Bancroft breathing down his neck during every move, Williamson fended off all challengers en route to the popular victory. Bancroft settled for second with JR Mooney, Dave Arbes and Tom Markham claiming the top-five positions.
D&D Powersports Sport Compact competition has been hot from the season opening events. Point leader, Rudy Widrick acting as Mr. Consistency thus far in ’07 shook the monkey and claimed his first win of the season, and the first of his career. After starting third on the grid, Widrick motored into the lead on lap five and held off perennial frontrunners Al Brigham and Tom Dubach on his way to the 15-lap event victory. Brigham, Dubach, last week’s winner Larry Costa and Scott Shafer rounded out the top-five.
Likely the most competitive and popular divisions at the Speedway, the Westward Painting Company Light Truck series brought a total of 21 trucks down to the green flag of Starter Tim Barone. At the start it looked to be another Todd McIntyre victory as the ’06 champion meticulously picked his way to the front of the pack and to the second position on lap six after starting 11th. Glenfield’s Keith Delles had other things in mind however. After taking the lead on lap six, Delles held off the McIntyre challenge for six consecutive laps before McIntyre hiked to the top-side and motored around the Delles machine to take the lead on lap 12. With McIntyre seemingly on his way to another victory, Delles didn’t let up one bit. With his right foot stuffed into the floorboard, Delles powered his S-10 pickup underneath the McIntyre mount to take the lead just as the white flag flew. When the checkers dropped it was Delles claiming his first win since 2005 while McIntyre, John Sullivan, Jim Trombley and early race leader Levi Kirkbride filled the top-five.
This Saturday at the Speedway is the Fathers Day Celebration; Twin-25 lap feature events for the L.E.T. ASA Challenger Late Models. Surely to see some exciting racing action, the twin feature events are certain to produce an all-new winner in 2007. Also on the racecard are the GotGoodCheese.com True Stocks, D&D Powersports Sport Compacts as well as the Westward Painting Company Light Trucks. While gates will swing open at 4pm, racing will get started at 6:30. For more information cal (315) 346-RACE or consult the Speedway website at www.adirondackspeedway.com.
PIT NOTES…While still a strong and diverse field, the ASA Challenger Late Model division saw the return of Matamoras, PA ’s Chola Shay as well as from Malta, Chris Ross. Despite opening night sorrow, Shay went on to finish in the sixth position as Ross’ slump continued. Although competing just outside the top-five early on, Ross later ended his night in the pit area with mechanical problems on his Donald Foor owned Monte Carlo . After four weeks, four different winners have graced victory lane among the GotGoodCheese.com True Stocks and D&D Powersports Sport Compacts. With the 6:30pm start, all racing was completed in merely two hours and forty minutes.
