JERRY DINEEN AND JOHN PAPIN TAKE TWIN FEATURES AT ADIRONDACK;
WILLIAMSON, SHAFER, AND LEVI KIRKBRIDE ALSO VICTORIOUS
New Bremen, N.Y. – Just two weeks prior of making it two full years away from the glorious victory lane at the Adirondack International Speedway, Little Falls’ Jerry Dineen halted his No. 11 Ford down in the celebration circle knocking off the first of two feature events for the ASA Challenger Late Models.
“This was a long time coming,” quoted the respected fan favorite after landing his 14th career win in the illustrious record books of the ASA-sanctioned speedplant, the same record books that he cued as the first Late Model feature winner in the history of the half-mile short track. “We’ve been through a lot this past season and I’ve got to thank my family and team who stuck it out to get us here.”
As the one-time Track Champion stole the glory in the first Twin-25 feature event for the ASA Challenger Late Models it was defending track champion John Papin sitting down in victory lane for the second, his fourth victory of the year in his Lloyd Roes & Sons No. 50 Chevrolet.
With a notable $100 placed on the line as a bounty against Papin, who had won the last three feature events at the Speedway , Dineen collected that honor with his victory. Turning the electricity to a maximum on this night was Herrington Farms & Rifenburg Construction, Inc. The duo placed a $1,000 challenge on the line to the driver who can hit victory circle in each of the two ASA feature events. As the winner of feature No. 1 had to elect to start tail in the second feature in order to collect the bonus, Dineen threw away a 4th place start in the nightcap delegating himself to the rear in hopes of coming up through the pack for the bold prize.
Other winners on at the Adirondack International Speedway was Duane Williamson notching his second consecutive win in the GotGoodCheese.com True Stocks, Scott Shafer collecting his first career Adirondack win in the D&D Powersports Sport Compacts and Levi Kirkbride taking the victory in the Westward Painting Company Light Trucks.
With the outside pole position in hand, Dineen took the lead at the drop of the green in the first of two 25-lap affairs and jumped out to a comfortable lead while the top point men of Papin, Lee Gill, Tommy Cloce, Bryant Trim and Jason Herrington beginning their rally to the front.
While Dineen was out to a sizable advantage, Lee Gill showed as the quickest on the track as he took the runner-up position on lap seven with Bryant Trim effectively in tow. Quickly on a tear, Papin entered the top-five on lap eight and began to apply pressure to Cloce who ran fourth. At the halfway point it was Dineen out front with Trim, Gill, Cloce and Papin in chase. The same top-five sat idle as the group battled through lap traffic. A 12-car lead went to shambles for Dineen when the lap car of Guilefuss went around on the front stretch tightening the field up for a lap 21 restart. With Trim on the prowl, Dineen fended off all challenging bids collecting his first win at Adirondack since early July of 2005. In the late going, Trim made a run on the top-side of the Speedway but was shuffled two positions as Gill was able to get by to take second with Cloce, Trim, and Papin filling the front five positions.
While Dineen drew No. 4 down in victory lane, he elected to start scratch opting to bid for the $1,000 Herrington Farms/Rifenburg Construction Inc. Back-to-Back Challenge.
The invert set fourth place finisher Trim on the pole for the second main with Cloce as his front row dancing partner. The two drag raced down to Starter Tim Barones green flag with Trim taking the holeshot into turn one. Quickly in pursuit was Papin, entering the lead battle on lap-five. On the restart, Papin hiked to the top groove firing from his third position and motored around turn four above Gill and Trim in the front two positions. With Papin taking the lead on the scoring of lap six, Mark Scoville and Mike Beyore would get together at the back of the field slowing the action for the second yellow of the event. As Papin now sat in the lead, Trim, Gill, Cloce and Andre Roggie filled the top-five positions. After taking the top spot, it was all cleary sailing for Papin. He would lead through the halfway point and onto the feature finish as Trim, Gill, Herrington and coming from the tail, Dineen filled the top-five spots.
The GotGoodCheese.com True Stock feature event began with a quick caution on lap one but thereafter ran green for the majority of the event. With heavy pressure from Dave Arbes and Dylan Bancroft, last weeks winner Duane Williamson was able to motor on for his second win in a row. Arbes held on for second while Bancroft, Newman and Mike Ramos took the top-five spots. After post-race technical inspection, Newman was disqualified for a weight infraction and shuffling JR Mooney into fifth place honors.
Five races in, and a total of five different drivers have graced victory lane thus far in the D&D Powersports Sport Compact division in 2007. With a handicap in full effect, Scott Shafer started in the pole position with all the heavy hitters right on his tail for the 15-lap event. The seven car feature had all the quality in the world for a classical battle. As Shafer held his No. 67 mount out front, the top runners came calling and they did it early. Before the halfway point, previous feature winners Tom Dubach and Al Brigham were battling in chase of Shafer. Shortly after it became a three way battle for the lead as Brigham held the upper hand over Dubach, looking to pounce on Shafer. However, it was all Shafer on this night, motoring on for his first career win after a photo finish with Al Brigham while Dubach, Tim Ingersoll and Larry Costa rounded out the top-five.
In the Westward Painting Company Light Trucks, fifth place starter Levi Kirkbride picked up the lead in the early going and went on for a win over heavy contender Zach Arthur. While each competitor hails from Lyons Falls , NY they both recorded their best finishes of the season, while it was a career best for Kirkbride. Close behind was Keith Delles while Steve Ellis took third and fourth. In fifth, Dan Bellinger of Remsen tallied a career best amongst the 23-truck field.
Notes: L.E.T. ASA Challenger Late Model Competitor; Chola Shay, Matamoras , PA , was involved in a lap one incident in the first ASA feature event. The well liked competitor made heavy contact with guardrails encasing turns three and four applying heavy damage to his No. 2s machine. Shay was OK in the incident. While an immediate return seemed unlikely, a member of the AIS media passed a hat around the stands to raise money for Shay’s benefit. A grand total of $1,560 was raised for Shay and was given to him before the end of the night. In pure amazement Shay graciously gave his thanks over the track P.A. after the show was completed. Shay is a one-time feature winner at Adirondack in 2006 and makes the 4 1/4 hour one-way travel from his Pennsylvania home each week to compete with the best in asphalt Late Model racing. The entire four division show was completed in a total of 3 hours and 15 minutes.
Next Saturday at Adirondack will be Schools Out Night. All kids 17 and Under will be admitted free of charge. Family Autograph Night will highlight the evenings events while a Kids Candy & Coin Toss will run in conjunction with the Autograph session. In addition the same superior four classes will return for a great night of racing action. All events are scheduled to begin at 6:30pm while grandstand gates will swing open at 4pm.
