LOGANO CLAIMS NASCAR BUSCH EAST SERIES EDGE HOTEL 150 THRILLER AT ADIRONDACK
NEW BREMEN – “I hear it is quite a unique place,” commented Logano leading up to this past Saturday’s “Edge Hotel 150 presented by Casella Waste Systems. With a “unique” track you are bound to get a unique finish. But hardly does it come during the biggest event of the season. Joey Logano survived a 150-lap dash to lead just one-quarter lap en route to collecting his fourth win of the year along the NASCAR Busch East Series and his first ever at the Adirondack International Speedway. ” When it was all said and done, the word unique could only serve as an understatement.
Hailing from Bristol, CT and piloting a Joe Gibbs Racing prepared Chevrolet Monte Carlo, point leader Joey Logano, out of nowhere, took the lead from Bryon Chew exiting the final turn and went on to win in thrilling style over all the rest including Matt Kobyluck, a two-time Edge Hotel 150 winner, who was penalized while leading earlier in the race.
As Kobyluck, a short-track ace at the Adirondack International Speedway, took the lead at lap-one he clearly displayed the best car on the track. The NASCAR Busch East Series veteran danced his Mohegan Sun Resorts Chevrolet Monte Carlo around the tricky half-mile with ease and while he started outside the front row he led the first six laps before Mike Olsen took the lead on lap seven. Olsen’s run would go to shambles on lap 19 as the defending champ would lose power on his Little Trees Car Freshner – Chevrolet Monte Carlo pointing his car behind the wall and out of contention. At that point Kobyluck would re-inherit the lead and lead until the halfway point when defending winner Sean Caisse pulled alongside and nosed ahead on lap 76. Caisse soon fell back and Kobyluck maintained the lead through lap 140. Within the final ten laps, the script began to be written. On a late restart, Kobyluck was penalized for jumping a restart. Directed to “give it back” by NASCAR officials, Kobyluck did not. By lap 146, Kobyluck’s scorecard was pulled and the Conneticut native pulled his machine pitside to undergo the penalty. Kobyluck made his stop and returned but did so now out of contention for his third win of his career at AIS. Back to the front it was Mattituck, (N.Y.’s) Bryon Chew at the point and Logano moving into second, each looking to garner career firsts at Adirondack. When the white flag flew, applying hard pressure was Logano and Caisse. With cars spinning on the back stretch, Rogelio Lopez looped on the front stretch. However, withholding any chance of a yellow flag the race remained green by rule of NASCAR. The trio raced back to the start finish line dodging slowed cars, and exiting turn four Logano diced to the bottom and ahead of Chew, taking the popular victory. Following behind was Chew for second and Sean Caisse for third. Fellow Joe Gibbs Racing driver (No. 18) Marc Davis took fourth followed by Peyton Sellers.
In the supporting ASA Challenger Late Model division, 21-cars pulled to the green flag for a 50-lap event and off the bat, action was evident. Andre Roggie and Shane Monnat paced the field at the start of the event before Tommy Cloce danced to the front firing from his fifth starting position. Cloce remained the leader through lap 10 when Jason Herrington took the lead and began to pull away. However, Lee Gill was immediately in tow and pulled to the rear bumper of Herrington by lap 14. The two went nose to tail with heavy action behind them. Making contact more times than not, Herrington continued at the front with Gill applying heavy pressure behind. At the halfway point they remained the same with John Papin, Bryant Trim and Cloce filling the top-five. Dicing for position, Trim snuck by Gill on lap 27 to take second one lap later before returning the spot to Gill on lap 30. Gill, clearly the faster car of the two, looking for racing room on the bottom showed Herrington he was there with a touch and the two remained nose to tail through lap 37. One lap later, entering turn two Gill pulled to the rear bumper of Herrington and with a faster car pressured for a lead change underneath Herrington. The two touched sending Herrington in a tail-slide. Unable to recover Herrington spun out of the groove and a yellow flag flew. Soon after, Gill was penalized to the rear of the field, thus handing the lead to a quick Bryant Trim. Battling for second, Cloce outlasted Papin but had nothing for Trim. Trim went on for his second victory of the year and the third of his career. Cloce and Papin took second and third while Herrington battled back to take fourth. Finishing fifth was Billy Coyle with his best run to date this season.
Notes: After outlasting numerous afternoon raindrops the Speedway continued on with their show only scratching NASCAR Busch East Series qualifying. The full grandstand was greeted with a near-hour long meet and greet session of all the NASCAR stars. Receiving the largest reception was Jeffery Earnhardt. Grandson of the late Dale Earnhardt, Sr., Jeffery was later told to stop signing autographs to move on with the show… Matt Kobyluck had the car to beat. However after jumping the late restart and not obeying NASCAR official commands, his scorecard was pulled before heading pitside to revalidate his scorecard. His bad dealing handed him a 13th place finish. After the event Kobyluck pulled down to victory lane and gestured to the control tower two thumbs down repeatedly. The large crowd went along with it letting out a barrage of “boo’s” in support of Kobyluck… Bryon Chew was on his way to a victory until a car involved in a last lap spin proceeded on the Speedway and blocked the groove of Chew allowing Logano to carry momentum to the bottom and underneath Chew. In victory lane, despite his frustration, Chew showed class congratulating Logano on the victory.
Next week at the Speedway is Newschannel 50 Night with the GotGoodCheese.com True Stock 500 – “A Salute to the North Country Dairy Industry”, a $500-to-win event with bonuses to post a possible winners total of $750. Also in action will be the ASA Challenger Late Models as well as the Sport Compacts and Light Trucks. For more information visit www.adirondackspeedway.com or call (315) 346-RACE.
