LEE GILL COLLECTS SECOND WIN OF THE SEASON AT ADIRONDACK; NEWMAN, WIDRICK AND DELLES ALSO VICTORIOUS
NEW BREMEN, NY – Lee Gill chased down the top runners and beat the best this
past Saturday night at the Adirondack International Speedway. The LaFargeville,
NY driver proved to be the class of the field in the Lyndaker Exc. & Trk. ASA
Challenger Late Models on his way to the $1,000 payday. Other winners on WWTI
Newswatch 50/GotGoodCheese.com Night were Bobby Newman in the GotGoodCheese.com
True Stocks, Rudy Widrick in the D&D Powersports Sport Compacts, and Keith
Delles in the Westward Painting Company Light Trucks.
Andre Roggie grabbed the initial lead at the start of the 50-lap ASA Challenger
Late Model feature as he out-dragged front row starter John Ventura to turn one
to lead in the early going. Roggie would open up a comfortable lead, but would
see that evaporate very quickly as point leader John Papin moved into second on
lap five and began a press for the lead. With perennial frontrunner Tommy Cloce
hot on his heels, Papin nosed into the lead on lap seven as the action amongst
the top-five brewed at a fast pace. With Gill firing from the sixth starting
spot, the complexion of the race soon changed as his presence began to be known
in the top-three.
With lap-times showing Gill as the quickest car of the three he reeled in both
Papin and Cloce and took the second position on lap 18. While Papin had opened
up a comfortable lead, the advantage quickly began to negate as Gill set a
torrid pace in second. By lap 30 the two were racing hot through lap traffic and
by lap 37, Gill made a run off of turn four taking the lead from Papin.
From there Gill put the car on cruise control to lead the rest of the way and
land his Gillee’s NAPA sponsored, 2007 Ford Fusion in victory lane. John Papin
was able to hold onto second place with Tommy Cloce finishing third. Jason
Herrington and 11th starter Billy Coyle rounded out the top-five. The
win was the second of the season for Gill and the second of his career on the
asphalt.
In the GotGoodCheese.com True Stocks Bobby Newman made a late-race pass pay off
as he grabbed his second win of the year in the biggest event of the season.
With a “Salute to the North Country Dairy Industry” the first annual
“GotGoodCheese.com 500” showed Tommy Markham taking the lead from the drop of
the green and looked to be heading for his first victory. Markham, while getting
heavy pressure from several quick runners fended off early contender; Chris
Typhair before Bobby Newman and Mike Ramos moved into second and third and began
a three-way battle for the lead. With ten laps to go the trio were shown moving
swiftly through lap traffic with Markham working the wheel flawlessly. On lap 25
with the five-to-go signal in the air, two lap-cars went side by side exiting
turn four blocking the racing groove for Markham. Now a cat-and-mouse battle
Markham went high, with Newman heading low. At the line it was Newman now the
leader. Pushing it harder as each lap passed, Newman outlasted Markham in the
remaining circuits tallying the popular victory worth a cool $500 plus bonuses.
Markham held on for second with Ramos, Dave Arbes, and Bill Mono rounding out
the top-five.
Rudy Widrick won his second Sport Compact feature at the speedway of 2007, and
did so in grand style. Widrick passed pole-sitter Terry Ingersoll early on and
fought off all challenges from Scott Shafer all the way until a lap 14 yellow
flag slowing the field for the first time of the night. With the rulebook
issuing a green-white-checker finish the lap counter was adjusted back to lap 13
and the field would pace back down to the starters green flag. At the restart,
Tom Dubach took second and immediately pressed on Widrick for the lead. The two
came down to the white flag and just as they did, Dubach switched lanes to the
top side and looked to motor pass Widrick. Exiting turn four, with the double
checkers in the air a drag race ensued and at the line a “dead-heat” appeared to
be the verdict. After repetition of video review, the win was rightfully awarded
to Rudy Widrick. Following Dubach across the line was Shafer, Al Brigham and
Chuck Powelcyzk.
Capping off a great night of feature events the Westward Painting Company Light Trucks took a record 27 trucks down to the green flag of chief starter Frank Fazio. Stringing out to four and five wide racing the action was heavy off the bat. After starting 14th on the field, Bill Aganier, Jr. took the lead on lap six and went on for the win. Immediately following the feature event, Aganier was disqualified for post-race technical infractions. Awarded the win was 10th place starter Keith Delles, his second of the year, while Zach Arthur, Steve Ellis, Bob McCanney and Al Miller rounded out the top-five.
NOTES: Several caution flag incidents had the standby ambulance rolling to attention on numerous occasions… In the Light Trucks, both Larry Williams and Derek Smith impacted the front stretch wall heavily in two separate incidents with each able to walk away under their own power. Their trucks however showed heavy damage… Kent Widrick of GotGoodCheese.com was on hand with the Lewis County Dairy Princess, Brittany Schroy, to kick off the highest paying True Stock event in track history. With Eric Perrigo’s beautiful milk truck pacing the field at the start of the event, the race was well received from both teams and fans alike…
