LEE GILL CAPTURES THIRD OF THE SEASON AT ADIRONDACK ON HI-LITE MARKINGS NIGHT
NEW BREMEN , NY – Lee Gill of La Fargeville had a week to forget last Saturday as engine woes took him out of ASA Challenger Late Model competition. However, this past Saturday the tables were turned and the former dirt modified standout tallied his third win of the year in the ultra-competitive division at the ASA-sanctioned Adirondack International Speedway.
Other winners on the hazy and humid night were JR Mooney in the GotGoodCheese.com True Stocks, Al Brigham in the D&D Powersports Sport Compacts, and Bill Aganier, Jr. in the Westward Painting Company Light Trucks.
Sitting on the front row for the 50-lap Lyndaker Excavating & Trucking ASA Challenger Late Model feature presented by Hi-Lite Markings was Josh Pieniazek and Mark Scoville. The two cycled out of turn four two abreast to the greeting of Tim Barone’s green flag with Pieniazek winning the drag race into turn one. The rookie driver from Schenectady (NY) led the first circuit before fellow rookie driver Andre Roggie made the pass to lead lap two. While turning strong laps, Roggie maintained the lead until lap six when Gill made his charge to the front taking the lead on lap six.
After starting sixth Gill was the class of the field. On lap 12, Tommy Cloce took the second position and began to reel in Gill but seemingly his TJ Toyota of Potsdam prepared No. 3 began to fight handling problems. On lap 15, point leader John Papin edged into the second position before Cloce took it back on lap 16 with Bryant Trim following his lead taking third, cycling Papin to fourth. By the halfway point Gill maintained a comfortable lead with Trim now in second. Papin sat third with Herrington in fourth and Cloce backsliding out of the top five.
At
the completion of lap 28, Scoville would break his steering and come to a stop
in turn one bringing out the fourth yellow of the race. At this moment Cloce
ducked into the pits for adjustments with Billy Coyle and Erik Cupernall
following. The trio all would return for a lap 29 restart. With 20 laps to go
Gill, Trim, Papin, and
Herrington still sat in the top-four with Jerry Dineen making his
presence known in the top-five, sitting fifth. Soon after Roggie would make his
way by Dineen and the top-five were shown still in chase of Gill. Overcoming lap
traffic with ease, Gill set his No. 7
Ford Fusion on cruise
control and rolled on to his third win of his career on asphalt and the third
overall of the 2007 season. Trim would take second followed by Papin and
Herrington. Making a late
race pass, Cloce raced back into the top-five at the checkers.
In the
GotGoodCheese.com
True Stocks JR Mooney made a big pass on former track champion Chris Typhair at
the halfway point to go on for his third win of the year. After starting seventh
Mooneys biggest challenge was that of Typhair before Dave Arbes moved into
second on lap 12 and began to press for the front. Clearly the better car,
Mooney motored on for the win with Arbes, Typhair, Mike Ramos, and Jason Dinzler
rounding out the top-five.
Al Brigham won his fourth of the year in the D&D Powersports Sport Compacts.
Running in black flag format from lap 15 on, Brigham took the lead from Rudy
Widrick on lap 22. After having started in the fifth position Brigham survived
the remaining two laps to outlast all competitors. Following in second was
Widrick, Tom Dubach, Tim Dunn, and Scott Shafer. With the victory Brigham
further padded his point lead over Widrick in the race for the 2007 Sport
Compact track title.
In the Westward Painting Company Light Trucks, a milestone was overcame. With 27 trucks signed into the pits, a total of 24 were able to take the green. With a slew of yellows dragging the 20-lap event on to the maximum, Bill Aganier, Jr. took the victory after a lap 12 pass on Dan Bellinger. Furthermore, Aganier survived technical inspection and was awarded the laurels of his second Light Truck victory of the year. After completion of technical inspection, the top-five showed John Sullivan, Jr., Zach Arthur, Dave Keefer and Bob McCanney in the final results.
Notes: A total of 70 vehicles spread across four divisions filled the infield pit area. Two guest announcers in Paul Szmal and Skip Howe enlightened the crowd with a different style of announcing different than usual style of head announcing ace, and the voice of Adirondack International Speedway; Gary Wilcox. A total of 25 prizes were given away to several general admission ticket holders. Among the prizes of t-shirts, hats, race tickets, and meal tickets, the prize giveaway is not complete.
