LEE GILL TAKES SECOND IN A ROW AT ADIRONDACK ON KIDS
NIGHT
NEW BREMEN, NY – On a
night solely devoted to the kids, all fans young and
old in attendance got the pleasure of witnessing
exciting racing action on “Kids Night” this past
Saturday at the ASA-sanctioned Adirondack
International Speedway.
Lee Gill of
LaFargeville (NY) captured his second win in a row
and his third of the year in the Lyndaker Excavating
& Trucking (LET) ASA Challenger Late Models while JR
Mooney tallied his fourth in a row in the
GotGoodCheese.com True Stocks. Tom Dubach recorded
the D&D Powersports Sport Compact “Jim McIntyre
Memorial” win as David Keefer took home the winning
laurels in the Westward Painting Company Light
Trucks.
In the headline event, 22
ASA Challenger Late Models strong, Gill outlasted
points leader John Papin in the late going, making a
daring move in lap traffic. After having started in
the eighth position, and bringing out the races
first yellow flag on the opening lap, Gill restarted
at the rear of the field and began his quest to the
front. The former dirt modified star broke the
top-ten on lap four and soon after pulled into the
top-five on lap seven. Chasing a fast Bryant Trim
and John Papin, Gill settled for third for the bulk
of the first half.
As the
top-two swapped position on a lap 18 restart, Gill
followed suit and moved into the second position on
lap 22. The top-five at the halfway point showed
Papin, Gill, and Trim followed by Tommy Cloce in
fourth and Erik Cupernall in fifth. Overcoming a
series of pit stops early on, Jason Herrington made
his presence known closing in on the top-five,
pulling into sixth at lap 28.
For the next
ten laps the race remained green as the leaders
closed in on lap traffic. By lap 37 lap traffic
wreaked havoc for Papin, and as lap 38 was being
scored, Papin became pinned behind a lap car on the
frontstretch leaving a clear opening on the top for
Gill. As Gill motored by Papin lagged back, now six
car lengths out of the top spot. Seemingly at ease,
Gill clear-sailed on his way to the victory,
handling lap traffic masterfully en route to his
fourth victory of the year in his Gillees
NAPA/Alpine Fence No. 7 Ford Fusion. Papin, Trim,
Cloce and Herrington would fill the top-five
positions across the finish line.
With the
victory, Gill took home the $1,000 top prize along
with a $500 winners bonus presented by Lloyd Roes &
Sons, LLC. of Lowville (NY).
Almost
identical to the problems that arose for Gill, JR
Mooney had to overcome the same misfortune in the
GotGoodCheese.com True Stocks. As the Boonville (NY)
native started in the 12th position, he
was shown spinning off the track on lap two.
Restarting from the rear of the field Mooney began
picking cars off one by one. On lap six he was able
to break into the top-five and begin picking away at
the top three.
With Tom
Markham leading, in search of his first victory of
the year, Mooney was shown in second by lap nine.
The two were in a race of their own as Dave Fetterly
closed in to contend for the top spot. As Markham
showed smoke on lap 12, his bid for the win expired,
as motor problems had him going pitside in his
Barrows Performance No. 7 Ford Thunderbird.
Immediately after, Fetterly took the top to his
liking going around Mooney and taking the top
position on lap 13. With the two trading lanes,
Mooney snuck by on the bottom to lead lap 17. With
Fetterly contending, Mooney motored on for the win,
his fourth of the year, while Fetterly, Dave Arbes,
Chris Typhair and Willie Redmond filled the
top-five.
For the D&D
Powersports Sport Compact “Jim McIntyre Memorial”
Tom Dubach made a late race pass on Scott Shafer to
motor on to the victory, his third of the year. The
event, dedicated to the life of Jim McIntyre, a
former competitor of the division and an everlasting
supporter of the Speedway, was well supported as a
total of 14 cars were entered for the growing
division. Rudy Widrick finished second as he passed
Shafer on lap 15 for the runner up position. Al
Brigham, Shafer and Tim Dunn took the remaining
positions to complete the top-five.
In the
Westward Painting Company Light Trucks, David Keefer
started in the 15th position and got a
great start on the field moving into the top-ten by
lap three. The local driver, moved into the fifth
position on lap six and began to work on the top
competitors picking his way to the lead. On lap
eight, Keefer nosed out front ahead of Cooter Beyer
for the lead. Closing in quickly in tow was point
leader Zach Arthur. Arthur, in search of his first
win of the year showed the quicker lap-times but
Keefer had the track covered. Closing the door twice
on Arthur on the final lap, Keefer went on for the
15-lap victory while Arthur, Ray Richer, Cooter
Beyer, and Keith Delles took the top-five spots.
With “Kids Night” on tap
at the Speedway the track gates were swung open
during intermission for a session of fun, all for
the children in attendance. To kick off the
entertainment the Top-10 drivers in the L.E.T. ASA
Challenger Late Model point standings took to the
track for a bicycle race. After 2007 feature winner
Bryant Trim took the victory in the two-wheeled
endurance contest, a candy and coin toss filled the
kids pockets just as a number of bicycles were being
prepped for the ultimate kids giveaway. When the
candy and coins were vacuumed up by the children, a
grand total of 32 bicycles were given away to
several youngsters in attendance. With several
drivers, sponsors, and teams pitching in, the
frontstretch was filled with smiles all over as
several lucky children walked away with pockets full
of candy and coins and some on brand new bicycles.
For the Sport
Compact division, all drivers took to the track for
a time trial session to set the field for a 20-lap
event. The reason for the Time Trials was
traditionally to celebrate the life of Jim McIntyre.
McIntyre was one who had always wanted to try Time
Trials, “as it brought the driver in competition
with the track rather than fellow competitors”. It
also put the demand out for good focus to “hit your
marks”, in search of your best possible lap time.
Tim Dunn, proved to hit his marks the best, taking
the $100 PoleSitter Award presented by Jim’s
brother; Dan at McIntyre Vinyl Graphics. On top of
the Pole Sitter Award, Jim’s wife Mary presented a
check for $81 to the 7th place finisher
in memory of Jim’s coveted No. 81. Terry Ingersoll
won that award, an award that “although you didn’t
win, it doesn’t mean you didn’t do your best” as
recalled by Jim’s family. An additional $250 was set
on the top-three spots courtesy of Lloyd Roes &
Sons, LLC.
Furthermore,
the Roes family also fronted $250 to the halfway
leader in the L.E.T. ASA Challenger Late Model
feature event. John Papin would secure that as Andre
Roggie took the $100 Hard Luck Award also presented
by the Roes Family.
This coming Saturday,
September 8th, Gillee’s NAPA Night will
bring the L.E.T. ASA Challenger Late Models back
together for a Champ 101 special. Additionally, all
divisions will be in competition and the race will
serve as the second-to-last points event of the 2007
season. Several giveaways are being planned for this
event as well, courtesy of Gillee’s NAPA. Ticket
prices have been discounted for this event. For more
